Can someone who is a leader not be a manager? Why or why not? Can someone who is a manager not be a leader? Why or why not? What are some skills that leaders need to possess? How can managers develop leadership skills?

I firmly believe that the most important trait of every leader is good managerial skills, in terms of managing money and people. So it is imperative for a leader to be a good manager.

Yes, it is possible that a good manager may not be a good leader. Leadership requires motivating skills; these skills are extensively used to motivate employees to accomplish their task. For example, an IT manager could be good in technical skills, but he may not succeed in motivating his subordinates.

Some of the important skills of a good leader are:

Passion: An effective leader is a person with a passion for a cause that is larger than they are.

Holder of Values: Leadership implies values. A leader must have values that are life-giving to society. It is the only kind of leadership we need. This then also implies values that are embedded in respect for others.

Vision: This is a bit different than passion, but in other ways it isn’t separable.

Creativity: One has to try to think out of the box to have good visions and to come up with effective strategies that will help advance the vision. I’d also add here the need for a sense of humor. It’s a creative skill that is in great need by leaders.

Managers must develop effective leadership skills to lead teams and achieve set objectives. Understand basic leadership styles and action-centred leadership for results.
