Socialization in Nursing

Nurses support patients in both good and challenging times, always committed to their well-being. I chose to pursue a career in nursing to make a meaningful impact on people’s lives by caring for them and supporting their journey toward health. Nursing’s constant need for adaptability and lifelong learning has always inspired me, even after completing formal education. Staying current with new practices, teachings, and advancements is essential for the profession. I particularly value the role of a nurse as an “Innovation Catalyst” (Saewert, 2020, p.32). In today’s fast-paced world, it’s also important to recognize the types of stress that nurses encounter throughout their careers. One such stressor is “overload” (DeGennaro, 2020, p.51). Addressing these challenges is essential, and nurses can develop strategies to prevent or alleviate this stress.

Nursing Role

The role of a nurse as an innovation catalyst involves “the capacity for lifelong and expert learning, preparing for new challenges and opportunities” (Saewert, 2020, p. 32). For me, this means staying current with essential nursing knowledge and maintaining flexibility within the profession. Being an effective catalyst for innovation requires not only adapting to change but also embracing and understanding it. It’s about continuously learning and fostering fresh perspectives. To embody this in the future, I plan to attend workshops, remain open to new ideas, and encourage others to share their thoughts alongside mine. Additionally, I believe a positive attitude can make a profound difference in any situation. I aim to adapt to change while staying grounded in the core principles of nursing, equipping myself for any challenges that may arise.

Role Stress

Role overload is a common concern nurses express when discussing the stressful aspects of their jobs. Although some level of job-related stress is normal, nurses often lack the necessary resources or time to manage their workload effectively. This stress is intensified by shift work, which sets strict time limits for task completion (DeGennaro, 2020, p. 51). With limited time, many nurses feel overwhelmed by the number of tasks they must accomplish. Additionally, “the increasing system and patient complexity, efforts to make healthcare more efficient and affordable, and advancements in healthcare technology continue to expand the workload of professional nurses” (DeGennaro, 2020, p. 51). Despite this growing workload and stress, nurses can adopt strategies to alleviate feelings of overload. For example, delegating tasks to others can help reduce individual workload (DeGennaro, 2020). Another useful approach is to create a prioritized list of tasks, which helps some nurses manage a busy shift more effectively (DeGennaro, 2020, p. 51). Personally, I would communicate with coworkers and managers if I found it challenging to handle my responsibilities. They might be able to provide assistance, offer guidance, or suggest alternative approaches. No matter what I am feeling, I believe that open communication would help me feel less isolated and reduce stress.

Conclusion

I chose to pursue nursing because I want to bring positivity and compassion to those who need care the most. Becoming a nurse who acts as a catalyst for innovation will help me achieve this by preparing me to embrace new challenges and opportunities. This approach goes beyond traditional professional socialization, fostering a mindset that enables me to see, do, and be, all rooted in the core purpose of nursing (Saewert, 2020, p. 32). While I know I will face challenges and potentially experience role overload, I plan to use strategies like prioritization to manage them effectively. As DeGennaro (2020) notes, “Prioritizing is essential when role overload emerges” (p. 52). My passion for nursing will support my role as an innovator and serve as a reminder not to let challenges prevent me from caring for others.
