Walden University NURS 3101 Issues and Trends in Nursing Week 1 Reflection

The first week of this course brought a mix of anticipation and nervousness as I embarked on my journey toward earning my advanced nursing degree. While preparing my discussion post, I found myself genuinely enjoying the process of researching articles and integrating the information into my response. This experience reinforced how much I value learning and professional growth. At the same time, I became more aware of the numerous challenges nurses encounter in their daily practice. Through this realization, I have come to appreciate how my pursuit of higher education serves not only my personal aspirations but also as a model for others in the profession. By continuing my education and advocating for nursing’s role as an essential part of the interdisciplinary healthcare team, I am helping bridge the gap for future generations of nurses. Although I still feel some uncertainty regarding the structure of my coursework and what will be expected of me as a graduate student, I am excited to take this next step in a field that I am passionate about.

This week’s readings introduced the key issues and trends that nurses face nationwide. I found it particularly compelling to read about leadership principles as illustrated through the story of Florence Nightingale, as well as the concept of creating a legacy map to provide direction and purpose throughout one’s nursing career. The idea of legacy mapping resonated deeply with me, as I have recently begun working on a project that I hope will contribute positively to both the nursing profession and the healthcare system in my community.

My personal mission involves establishing a post-graduate fellowship training center for nurse practitioners in my hometown. To bring this vision to life, I have begun the foundational work of initiating conversations with key stakeholders within the university health system, which includes both a School of Nursing and a School of Medicine. I believe that integrating nurse practitioners into the clinical and didactic training of medical residents and students could foster a mutually beneficial learning environment, enhancing both professional collaboration and patient care outcomes. By promoting a model of interdisciplinary education and practice, I hope to strengthen the nurse-physician relationship while improving healthcare delivery in my region.

Ultimately, I aspire to leave behind a meaningful contribution to the field of nursing—not for personal recognition or accolades, but for the positive, lasting impact it could have on the profession and the well-being of my community. Much like Florence Nightingale, who prioritized the needs of others over personal achievement, I am motivated by the desire to create sustainable change that enhances the quality of care and professional development within nursing.
