Embarking on this academic journey fills me with excitement as I prepare a structured plan to achieve my professional aspirations. This paper outlines my professional goals, my educational background, and the experiences that have shaped my path as a Master of Science in Nursing (MSN) student with a specialization in Adult-Gerontology Primary Care Nurse Practitioner (AGPCNP).
My journey into nursing began with a strong vision. I had a deep desire to become a humanitarian aid nurse, working on the front lines in disaster-stricken areas and war-affected regions. In 1998, as a certified nursing assistant, I was inspired by a wound care nurse who encouraged me to explore wound care specialization. Motivated by this, I became a Licensed Practical Nurse (LPN) in 2004 and obtained my wound care certification from the National Alliance of Wound Care in 2007.
As an LPN, I gained experience working as a wound care nurse, a sub-acute rehabilitation bedside nurse, and an assistant director of nursing at an assisted living facility. Recognizing the need for continued growth, I enrolled in a career ladder program in 2012 to transition from LPN to Registered Nurse (RN), completing the program and obtaining my RN license in 2014. My professional experiences expanded to roles in a wound healing center, home health agencies, and hospice care. Encouraged by mentors and colleagues, I pursued another career advancement opportunity in 2015, enrolling in an RN-to-BSN program. In 2018, I graduated from Sentara University with a Bachelor of Science in Nursing.
As a BSN-prepared nurse, I felt a calling to make a broader impact in healthcare. Currently, I work with hospice and home health agencies on an as-needed basis, which allows me to focus on advancing my education and preparing for my future role as a nurse practitioner.
My goal as a nurse practitioner is to provide holistic care that leads to excellent patient outcomes. The driving force behind my decision to become an NP is my commitment to serving others. Walden University provides me with the opportunity to achieve my most significant career aspiration: to become a well-trained, knowledgeable NP capable of making a meaningful impact on a global scale through humanitarian aid work.
According to Walden University (2018), my academic plan over the next three years involves taking two courses per semester as a full-time student, from the fall of 2018 through the winter of 2020, completing a total of 56 credit hours. I have structured my schedule to ensure that no outside obligations will interfere with my studies. My anticipated graduation with an MSN specializing in AGPCNP is set for the spring of 2020. Following graduation, I will work toward obtaining my advanced practice license in the fall of 2020. In the meantime, I will join a professional NP network and begin my clinical practice in outpatient clinics and as a visiting hospice NP. Additionally, I will align myself with a humanitarian aid organization to begin volunteer work in underserved communities.
When I first enrolled at Walden University, I was not fully aware of the significance of the “Foundation for Graduate Study” course. To ensure I had the time to focus on this class, I dropped another course, prioritizing my success in this foundational program. Since then, I have integrated Walden University’s mission into my personal and professional mission statement.
The introduction to scholarly writing and peer-reviewed research has provided me with more knowledge than I initially expected. I have gained the ability to navigate Walden’s online library, conduct thorough research, and utilize various academic support resources. The university offers invaluable tools such as the writing center and library services, both of which have significantly enhanced my ability to conduct research, communicate effectively, and manage my time efficiently.
While I have made great strides, I recognize that I still have areas for improvement, including refining my APA formatting, maintaining a scholarly tone in my writing, and addressing certain grammatical issues. To strengthen these skills, I have taken proactive steps by engaging in self-paced modules in the Writing Center. With all potential obstacles addressed, I feel fully prepared and ready for the challenges ahead.
Securing a practicum site and a qualified preceptor is a critical step in my journey as an NP student. As Staples and Gormley (2018) emphasize, clinical experience is a fundamental component of NP education and depends heavily on the availability of preceptors. Understanding this, I initiated conversations with potential preceptors before applying to Walden University. I have already spoken with two primary care physicians and a hospice director, all of whom have expressed their willingness to support my practicum experience. Additionally, I have identified two nurse practitioners who are willing to serve as mentors and provide guidance throughout my clinical training.
My goal is to formally secure a practicum site at an outpatient clinic with one of the primary care providers by 2019. Upon completion of my program, I will be equipped to manage patient health needs using evidence-based practices and critical thinking, as outlined by the American Association of Nurse Practitioners (2018). I will be prepared to provide preventive care, educate patients on healthy decision-making, and deliver high-quality, patient-centered care.
My journey at Walden University as an MSN student with a specialization in AGPCNP is one I embrace with excitement and dedication. Two decades ago, I never imagined I would reach this stage in my career. However, my experiences, educational background, and passion for serving others have led me here. Through hard work, perseverance, and the support of Walden University, I am confident that I will fulfill my lifelong dream and contribute to positive social change wherever my career takes me.
