WGU NURS3670 D225 Emerging Professional Practice - Professional Development Plan

Five-Year Professional Development Plan

A1. Short-Term, Intermediate, and Long-Term Goals

In the short term, I aim to complete the RN-BSN program at WGU by the first quarter of 2024. Additionally, I plan to become a Certified Hospice and Palliative Nurse (CHPN) and acquire Advanced Cardiovascular Life Support (ACLS) certification by the end of the year. My intermediate goal is to refine my nursing expertise and, after completing a three-year tenure at my current workplace, transition to a medical-surgical unit. Looking ahead, my long-term goal is to become a float nurse while mentoring new nurses. Maintaining all certifications will also be a priority.

A2. Current Certificates or Certifications Requirements

At present, I hold a Basic Life Support (BLS) certification, which my workplace requires to be renewed every three months. The renewal process is concise, involving an hour-long review, a quiz, and a skills assessment.

A3. Future Certificates or Certifications Requirements

To qualify for the CHPN exam, I need at least 500 hours of hospice and palliative care nursing experience within the past year or 1,000 hours over the last two years. Furthermore, a current U.S. registered nurse license is mandatory. Candidates can take the exam either at a testing center or remotely with live proctoring. Upon passing, the certification is valid for four years, and renewal requires meeting practice hour requirements and accumulating points via professional activities such as continuing education, publishing, and mentoring (Certified Hospice and Palliative Nurse Association, 2024).

For ACLS certification, eligibility as a registered nurse is required. The training covers essential algorithms and techniques for managing airway obstruction, cardiac arrest, stroke, and other cardiovascular emergencies. After completing the course, I must pass a written and skills test to obtain certification. Recertification every two years involves refresher training on airway management, CPR, and drug therapy (Advanced Cardiovascular Life Support, 2024).

A4. Education Requirements

To earn my BSN from WGU, I must complete the remaining six units to satisfy the 37-unit requirement. For the course Emerging Professional Practice D-225, I must fulfill its performance assessments and log 45 clinical hours in chronic care and palliative or hospice settings. Additionally, I must complete the BSNU-Capstone or D-226 course by successfully completing the assigned performance tasks.

A5. Work Experience Requirements

Becoming a proficient float nurse demands extensive knowledge of common diseases and their treatments, which boosts confidence during patient interactions. To build this expertise, I intend to gain part-time experience in a medical-surgical unit. Moreover, as float nurses often handle critical emergencies, ACLS certification is essential for administering IV medications during such scenarios.

A6. How Your Professional Development Plan Will Allow You to Be a Change Agent

I aspire to become a float nurse and preceptor for nursing students and new graduate nurses. To precept RNs pursuing a BSN, I need at least one year of experience after earning my BSN. Through this role, I can share my knowledge and inspire others to advocate for patient care. My experiences as both a student and a new nurse have instilled in me the value of having supportive mentors. By becoming a preceptor, I can guide new nurses in providing compassionate and effective care.

Certificates and Certifications

AMNH, ELNEC, and SOGI Nursing Certificates

To achieve my goal of becoming a float nurse within five years, I plan to pursue certifications from the American Museum of Natural History (AMNH), the End-of-Life Nursing Education Consortium (ELNEC), and the SOGI Nursing program. The AMNH certificate has deepened my understanding of genetics, enabling me to provide personalized patient care. ELNEC has equipped me with skills to address end-of-life care with sensitivity. The SOGI Nursing certificate has enhanced my ability to meet the needs of LGBTQ patients.

How the Certificates Will Be Used Within Professional Practice

These certifications will directly enhance my role as a hospice and long-term care nurse. For instance, with the AMNH certificate, I can educate families about inherited conditions. A specific example is guiding an ALS patient and their family through the benefits of genetic testing.

The ELNEC certificate has provided me with a solid foundation in hospice and palliative care, particularly in educating families about pain management and respecting patient autonomy during end-of-life care. Additionally, the SOGI Nursing certificate allows me to address patients’ unique needs, such as confirming pronouns and fostering an inclusive environment.

How the Certificates Support Your Professional Development Plan

These certifications are integral to my growth as a healthcare provider. The AMNH program has enhanced my understanding of genetic factors in diseases like Huntington’s disease, enabling collaboration for effective patient care. The ELNEC program has refined my approach to hospice care, allowing me to provide empathetic, family-centered support during critical times. The SOGI Nursing certificate has prepared me to create a welcoming environment for LGBTQ patients by promoting cultural humility and addressing their specific needs.

Why the SOGI Nursing Certificate Was Chosen

I pursued the SOGI Nursing certification to improve my communication with LGBTQ patients. This decision was motivated by workplace incidents highlighting a lack of cultural sensitivity. Through this program, I aim to challenge heteronormative assumptions and provide culturally humble care that builds trust and therapeutic relationships with LGBTQ patients.
