Regardless of how well-thought-out people’s plans can be, there is always the possibility that something can go wrong. When negative situations occur people should be prepared to face them using back up or contingency plans. Contingency plans address the “what-ifs” of any plan. Contingency plans allow people to be prepared before the negative events occur; indeed, they already know what to do in case something does go wrong. However, contingency plans cannot cover all possibilities. Therefore, what people should do is to identify the most critical assumptions of their plans and prepare contingency plans for the issues that have a reasonable chance that they are going to happen (Rue & Byars, 2004).
